Quilt block boot camp

At the start of the year I joined the Facebook group quilt block boot camp. Little did I know how much I would enjoy the challenge, patchwork is fast becoming my favourite thing to do.

I am always a little behind as I write this I have just finished last week’s and this weeks so I am all up to date until tomorrow when another one comes out.

I have been so behind on everything because both of my boys were quite unwell so much so I was falling apart a bit and started to feel sorry for myself and wondering how much more I could take but then I just gave myself a mental kick up the bottom because of course things could be a lot worse. I have a lovely husband who helps out around the house, two beautiful boys (if I do say so myself) and we are all usually pretty healthy. I am glad to say both boys are on the mend and my kick up the backside made me realise I have a lot to be appreciative of even when things are a bit chaotic!

Have a think about it, what are you grateful for?

My year in review

I am going for the alternative review today so here goes:

Most special moment:- ย Well this one is easy my son was born in August and my oldest son is over the moon with his new little brother, what more cold I ask for.

Projects still in progress:- Well I couldn’t really do a list of my work completed as because quite frankly it would be very small.

  • THAT Scarf, that is what I call it now seriously will ย it ever be finished?a little longer
  • A christmas cushion
  • a tote bag
  • my son’s patchwork quilt

Disclaimer: this is probably not a complete list, there may be more hidden round the house that I may have stored for a later date.

Did I blog at least twice a week? (as per last years resolutions) Hahaha That is all I have to say on that one!

Seriously though this has been my year of learning…

What did I learn from this year:

  • How to cut straight with a rotary cutter, seriously this was not easy for me! (p.s I could not remember the name of that knife thingy, I had to look it up on the net until I came across what I was looking for: rotary cutter. Oh 8 hour sleeps how I miss you)
  • Not to be so critical of myself when it comes to sewing, my sons quilt rarely matches up but you know what he will love it so why was I worrying? (well he will love it once it is finished that is!)

What did I achieve?

  • I guess giving the tote bags away to family was a big thing. Hardly anyone in my family (or friends) knew that I was blogging or sewing!

I hope to have an actual finished project list for 2015. Fingers crossed….

An almost finished quilt

mid progress 3

This quilt has been a long time coming and it is nearly finished!

I have found this quilt very hard to sew, when I started I had many clothes from my son to pick from but I didn’t consider the stretch being so different. Some squares ended up being much bigger then others……

I would normally be frustrated with imperfections but I had to let this go a bit while sewing it up. Now the top is completed I just need to add a backing.

So watch this space I may just have completed quilt some day soon.

Little boys quilt, two patches complete!

Well I don’t know what has come over me but I seem to be doing more crafting this past week then I have all month

I sat down yesterday evening and got to it

armed with a cup of tea I managed to do some sewing

I came up with two squares (although I must admit I use the word square quite loosely)

I have to say it took a while to get to this stage as the vest material is much more stretchy then the t-shirt or sleep suit material and my machine just did not like it (I blame my machine and I am sticking to it!)

The other patch I completed was quite plain

I will be seeing squares and rectangles in my sleep

So now I am left with a decision for tonight do I a) cut up more squares or b) make another patch?

By the way I have no plan at all with this I am making it up as I go along.

my little boys quilt (progress report)

Well I may be further along with this quilt then the one I started months ago! maybe because this one is so sentimental.

Another thing that has really baffled me is why I make such small squares, I had not even noticed until my husband asked me why I do everything so small? Well I have no idea!

Baby clothes all cut up and ready for use.

This past weekend has been super busy, my Mum had a wonderful birthday party but unfortunately my little guy was unwell and couldn’t go. He was so excited he even stated the next morning that “I go party” we felt bad for him but he seems not to have noticed that the party has been and gone and he did not attend. So on Sunday we had a chilled day and he spent quite a bit of time in the garden with his Dad.

I was lucky enough to have some flowers picked for me.

I am going to try and put together some mini pieces of fabric tonight for his quilt, this may be when I regret having such small squares! wish me luck ๐Ÿ™‚

Queen of the unfinished or captain of the new

I was sorting through my son’s clothing and found a few t-shirts that are too small for him and my instant thought was I should make a quilt with them, as you do!

Start ANOTHER quilt that is, surely you can never have too many things on the go.

I have saved tons of his clothes just in case… and well two t-shirts was not going to be enough so I had a dig through one of the containers that hold his smaller clothes and found a few I could just about bear to cut up.

I do not remember him being so small, time sure does fly by.

I also managed to cut myself (again)

Cut myself again!
Cut myself again!

It was not a bad cut but it did need a plaster and the only one I could find was one with a moustache on it, who thought that product up?! Will i ever get used to my rotary cutter? so many questions so little time.

I am now off to catch some sleep before my mum’s big 6 0 tomorrow and her Birthday bash.

More fabric arrived today :-)

Well I recieved more fabric in the post today, I may have bought it for myself but hey ho, HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ME ๐Ÿ™‚

downloadNow I was supposed to order fabric for my ongoing quilt project but I do not think these ones quite make the cut. It does not mean I do not love them because I do, I especially adore the floral one on the right which leaves me in a dilema should I order more? and ignore the raisd eyebrows of my husband?

These ones will be in the quilt I think. I am sooo sorry about the picture, I always post at night when the little guy is in bed so I do the photo’s in no natural light, the shadow in this one is me trying not to lean over the photo without success.

A quilt in progress

Well I started making a quilt a few months back, it is only my second (ever) and I have made some mistakes, I am ok with that as they say you learn from mistakes right?!

My first quilt I started many years ago, It (when I say “it” in this instance i mean the idea) started off as a double sized quilt and ended up the size of a wall hanging! I did not have the patience for cutting the squares neatly to the exact same size, something I have only realised was a down fall since starting this second quilt and the other big mistake was the binding, a mistake I have still not rectified.

Now on to the second one

downloadI started it when I had a selection of fabrics but not enough to make a whole quilt, mistake number 1. I need to buy more fabric, which is no hardship BUT it means the newer fabric will not appear on these three strips.

downloadYou can probably see from the above picture mistake number 2, look at that green square in the middle, if it is actually a square and not a rectangle….

Despite all the mistakes I still like what I have done so far, all I can say it is going to have character once it is finished.

I did buy more fabric for the quilt

downloadYou will also be glad to hear that I got a rotary cutter and Mat!
