New year new me?

Well we had a wonderful Christmas and new year, I hope you did too, but one of my most favourite things is the start of a new year, the blank page, the pristine sheet of fallen snow before anyone walks across it.

With a new year comes new years resolutions, please do not groan because I understand you either dislike new years resolutions with a passion or you are just sick and tired of hearing about them by now am I right?

If you are like me and love goals or maybe need goals for motivation then read on….

I have a little secret to confess… I did not meet any of my goals from last year! not a single one and in some cases (like blogging regularly) I was way off.

So this year I thought lets make it a little different, not so strict so I came up with:

1. Cook through my cookbooks, I don’t have a huge amount of cookbooks but I do have a few and I never really use them so this year my goal is to work through them one recipe at a time. This means we will branch out from our comfort zone and try new things and may find we like some things that just don’t sound that appealing, I mean who likes the thought of cream of artichoke soup? but hey it may be amazing I just don’t know yet. There will be no set date to finish a book, I may not even finish one book but hopefully we will find new dishes we love so there will be an achievement.

2. Be more organised, this is on my list near enough every year in one form or another, for the last few years it has been to remember peoples birthdays well this has never happened! I have trouble even remembering which date my husbands birthday is on- is it the 23rd or 24th? It is in January by the way so I am about to find out.

SO how could I make this goal of being more organised more achievable? well I am ditching trying to remember birthdays and have bought myself a diary and I can be quite organised I have a weekly meal plan and before baby number two it used to be a monthly meal plan! If I can do that I can surely shape up in other areas too so this year my goal is a cleaning rota, I am going to try and stick to it but have a 5 day rota so anything that gets missed I will do at the weekend. I have also popped it up on the fridge so I am reminded of what I need to do at least 4 times a day, no excuses right?

3. Last but not least to be more conscious  of my sugar intake. I am addicted to chocolate and can’t seem to give it up entirely but last year I cut out sugar in tea and then cut out sugar in coffee. So this year I want to do better with breakfast… See I am a snacker so I figure a more filling breakfast will help keep me full until lunch time. I have started with porridge sometimes I have a little fruit and sometimes not. we will see how I go.

I have other goals, many little goals because that is how I work best, todays goals was one load of washing, helping my son write his thank you cards and modernising my blog a little, all of which I have achieved, I know some people may call it a to do list but where is the achievement when the list is complete? completing a goal is much more of an accomplishment right? plus does a to do list ever end?

Fabric wreath

While on holiday I was invited by relatives to a fabric wreath workshop. Who knew making a wreath could be so much fun? and that making a wreath with scraps of fabric could be even  more fun?

Well quite a few in the group went with the traditional red but for some reason I was drawn to blue with a splash of pink of course

Night time pictures again, you think I would know better by now, maybe that is something to work on in the new year, my first resolution for 2014 to work on my photography skills?

I thoroughly enjoyed making the wreath, so much so that I bought some items online so that I could make so more! I know what you are thinking, does this girl (at what age is it wrong to refer to yourself as a girl?) not have enough projects on the go already?! well is it not better to have choice and variety I ask you? 😉

Maybe another goal for next year is to finish all my outstanding projects…. ha ha

Now let me get back to my project the wreath took about two hours to make bearing in mind the fabric was already cut out for us. I literally have nothing to complain about or judge or anything I feel I could have done better! I think a big thing with many people including myself is that we can be very self critical and for once I am not going to be (not withstanding the rest of the post about all my unfinished projects that is) I love my wreath, all the wreaths made in the workshop were very different and all lovely. There was also tea and cake provided. I think this rounds up exactly what my perfect evening would look like.

If you happen to be in the western isles pop into Alison is super nice and very talented.

Are there any workshops you would recommend for a good evening or afternoon out?

Glitter letters

I have been blinging (is that even a word?) it up tonight.

I some how managed to get glitter everywhere, even in my hair!

I spent as much time cleaning up as I did for painting the letters and adding glitter BUT it was well worth it, I like the end result only time will tell if the glitter stays put on the letter or sheds like a long haired cat.

I will let you know how they look after a few days of standing there and looking pretty.

Not much crafting but plenty of other stuff

I have not managed to fit in any sewing at all in the past week 😦

BUT I have been doing a lot of other stuff, like completing a 3 mile walk for Macmillan cancer support on Saturday! It was a beautiful day and the walk “miles for macmillan” was held at Regents park. To make it even more special and also very amazing I completed the walk with a work colleague, some of our tenants and my son who is going to be 3 soon.

Let me tell you the tenants were amazing, these ladies range in age from 70-89! I am gutted that I can not put pictures up of them (I am sure it would break some work rule of some kind) but how can you not feel inspired by them and boy I hope I have that much get up and go when I reach their age!

I can however share a picture of my son who thought he was superman as he got a t-shirt and cape to wear

It really was a great day and I would recommend it for families my son felt so special when he got his medal at the end.

Then on Sunday we took the little superman to the cinema for his first time ever, he munched his way through all the popcorn and when he had finished he said “film finished?” haha typical man, it is all about the food! 😉 We had the cinema almost completely to ourselves bar one other family!

(Have to say my photography skills have hit a new low with this photo)

So maybe, just maybe I will fit some sewing in this week.

My holiday and a sick sewing machine

Well it has been non stop for my little family lately. First we jetted off to Lanzarote, all inclusive for ten days (woo hoo) needless to say I have put on weight 😉 we took my mum for her 60th Birthday but to be honest the holiday was just what we needed too.

We got home on the Friday morning and my mother-in-law and nephew came down from Scotland on the Monday! Our nephew had never been to London so of course we had to show him all the sights, the London eye, London dungeons, London zoo and Chessington world of adventures

They went home on Wednesday and I am EXHAUSTED.

So I decided a nice bit of sewing on Thursday evening was just what I needed but either my machine is very upset with me for abandoning it for almost a month or it is unwell but either way it is just not playing ball 😦 so there has been no sewing this week HUMPH

I have decided I needed a new machine anyway but to be fair to my little brother (sewing machine) she has been a good little machine so I am really not sure what to do
